Cullinan strikes a balance between Casino Royale and Pulp Fiction with Bar One ad
Issued by: Fresh Eye Film Productions

A famous actor, loads of locations, an Aston Martin DB9, lots of action, real firemen and the SPCA all combined to help create the new sixty second, epic TV commercial for Bar One. It was conceptualised by JWT and directed by Bevan Cullinan from Fresh Eye Film Productions.

You could describe this commercial as a cross between Casino Royale and Pulp Fiction and any fans of the period style tv show - The Tudors - will recognise the handsome lead man, who was flown in especially from London.

Pitched at young males, the commercial is a spoof on an action hero. Running into a burning house, he rescues kegs of beer, in a boxing ring he is fighting a small boy and he sheds a tear buying an Aston Martin DB9. The ad clearly exploits everything that depicts an action man, which is where the humour comes in.

This commercial was a particularly enjoyable shoot for Cullinan, who describes it as very cinematic. “It has no dialogue, which meant we could craft the performances in other directions. It was also great to be able to pull out all the toys on a commercial that deserved them.”

JWT copywriter, Neil Ross, said this ad was a big one to pull together. “It nearly broke the budget, until Fresh Eye pulled a few strings. And as far as directors go, Bevan is always so much fun to work with.” It looks like the admiration between the creative minds on this shoot worked both ways. Cullinan said it was a complete pleasure working with Neil and Dave Strappini.

Ross adds, “And for all you animal lovers out there - no, it wasn't a real kitty that fell out of the tree. It is amazing what you can do with computer graphics and a sand-filled sock.”
