Picture Tree director Wim Steytler was awarded a prize at the prestigious CFP-E/Shots Young Director Award - widely regarded as the hottest show in the world for discovering new directing talent. The work Steytler was awarded for is Minted - the music video he directed for acclaimed electronic artist, Haezer.
"It's a great honour to get recognised on such a huge international platform," says Steytler. "I hope this will give rise to more opportunities to make films that are brave, honest, and don't hold back any punches."
Minted offers a visionary depiction of Johannesburg's unseen inner city, delving deep into the underbelly of the city and adding layers through interpretation and narrative. The result is a compelling social statement - an Afrocentric work that tells the story of the continent in a remarkably realistic but magical way.
"My focus now," Steytler says, "is to build a strong foundation for my career as a commercials director at Picture Tree, create beautiful ads and still make time to pursue proactive projects like this one that gives me space to develop my own voice as a filmmaker."
About Wim Steytler Wim Steytler studied art and visual communication at Stellenbosch University and has a background in editing. He recently jumped from research to director because of his talent in creating emotive and provocative films. His work in documentary and music videos has given him a unique combination of skills in producing content that is stylised but still captures human connection.
