'Four Corners', directed by Ian Gabriel, scores IPA Best International Film nomination

South Africa's Official Oscar Submission for Best Foreign Language Film, Four Corners, is recipient of a Best International Film Nomination from the International Press Academy in Los Angeles. The South African coming-of-age film, set in the 'unknown world of the Cape Flats', was completed only twelve weeks ago and is a newcomer in a field of well-established competitors in the International Film category.

The South African entrant, directed by Ian Gabriel, is the only nominee from Africa in the group of 10 international films competing in the Motion Picture, International Film category for the prestigious IPA Satellite Awards.

Four Corners' nomination by the influential IPA places the film alongside the most frequently tipped 2014 Oscar Best Foreign Language film contenders and is considered a boost to South Africa's Oscar ambitions, coming only days before the official screening of the Cape Flats coming-of-age film to the Academy's Foreign Language Film Committee.

Leading the nominations across all categories were 12 Years a Slave (Steve McQueen) with 10 nominations, and Gravity (Alfonso Cuaron) and American Hustle (David O. Russell) with eight nominations each.

Over the 17-year history of the Satellite Awards (formerly called the Golden Satellite Awards), most Oscar Best Picture nominees were also Satellite nominees. The winner of the Satellite Award for drama has gone on to be named the Oscars' Best Picture five times (including four in a row from 2006-2009), while the Satellite comedy winner has been named Best Picture once.

The Satellite Awards ceremony will be held one week after the Oscars, on March 9, 2014 in Los Angeles.
