April income in food‚ beverages industry up 4.8%

SA's food and beverages industry generated a total income of R3.699 billion year on year (y/y) in April‚ representing a 4.8% rise‚ according to data released by Statistics SA on Monday, 18 June 2012.
The main contributor to the increase was food sales‚ which posted a 4.6% increase and contributed 4 percentage points‚ Stats SA said.

Income from food sales alone were R3.187 billion‚ representing a 4.6% y/y increase‚ while income from bar sales rose 5.8% or R452.5 million.

The annual positive growth rate of 4.8% in total income in April was driven by takeaway and fast-food outlets; followed by restaurants and coffee shops. Catering services recorded a decrease of 1.7% and contributed -0.3 of a percentage point.

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry for the three months to April increased by 6.9% compared with the same period last year.

The main contributor to this increase was food sales with 6.7% and a contribution of 5.8 percentage points.
