Burger King celebrates SA heritage and introduces the Milktart Milkshake

Heritage Month provides a platform for all South Africans to embrace and celebrate our diverse nation. To pay tribute to South African heritage, fast-food restaurant Burger King® South Africa introduced a local favourite to its menu, with a bit of a twist - the Milktart Milkshake.

The sweet and creamy milkshake, with a hint of cinnamon, takes you on a trip down memory lane as each sip welcomes a traditional and authentic flavour.

Ezelna Jones, Group Marketing Executive at Burger King® South Africa, says that although guests enjoy Burger King® for its global appeal, the local items on the menu are certainly a firm favourite. “Our goal was to launch an exciting new limited-time-offer to the menu in time for Heritage Day, which would celebrate a tradition that many South Africans can appreciate.

“It ties back to our strategy, “have it your way” – the South African way,” says Jones.


Jones explains that the brand wanted to introduce an innovative product that would generate excitement from guests. “We looked at consumer buying behavior and spent time working with our R&D team to create a milktart dessert that tastes as good as the original, and we definitely nailed the brief.

“In fact, we believe our version of the milktart is so good that even South African Oumas – the real custodians behind the dessert – would approve,” says Jones.

To put it to the test, Burger King® SA invited two local musicians, Patty Monroe and Craig Lucas, to bring their Ouma’s to Burger King® to try the new shake. “We are happy to report that it passed with flying colours,” says Jones.

Jones continues, “We will also be visiting Neighborhood Old Age Home (NOAH) on the 25th of September to deliver Milktart Milkshakes (and Boerewors Burgers) to see if we get their stamp of approval.”

“So far, the feedback from our guests has been overwhelmingly positive, which is testament to the fact that adapting global strategies to local markets plays an essential part to successful business campaigns,” concludes Jones.

From Friday, 21 September, Burger King® is offering a Heritage Month combo deal to all Burger King® App users. This offer will be up for grabs until 30 September 2018 (with the possibility of extension).
