A great match with earthy-flavoured, robust dishes, it brings out the flavours of seared beef, spicy lamb or game casseroles. It is available from the farm in Paarl at R120, as well as from gourmet wine shops and fine dining establishments countrywide.

Legendary icon

It is as full character and finesse as Günter Brözel, the legendary former winemaker at Nederburg, who is the inspiration for the title of Motorcycle Marvel. Brözel, regarded as an industry maven and a maverick, led the winemaking team at Nederburg from 1956 to 1989 and was known for his exceptionally high standards. The sound of his 250 cc BSA motorcycle could strike fear in the hearts of his team. It was warning that he was on his way to check that his exacting demands were being met.

He was meticulous and refused to countenance mediocrity in any of his team, winning many awards and honours. One of the most significant was the International Wine & Spirit Competition's Robert Mondavi International Winemaker of the Year Award in 1985. He was the first winemaker in South Africa to achieve this distinction.

"He is an icon in South African winemaking and has been an inspiration to me and our cellar team," says Macici, cellar-master since 2001. For more information, go to www.nederburg.co.za.
