Trevor Noah SA's most-watched on YouTube

Judging by the number of comedy and entertainment videos featured in the YouTube Rewinds 2016 list South Africans needed a bit of the lighter side this year.

Topping the list was The Daily Show's Trevor Noah with videos on President Jacob Zuma and the Panama Papers.

Second on the list was I'll Beat You from Nigerian channel Mark Angel Comedy, featuring child comedian Emanuella.

Cape Town choreographer Rudi Smit's flash mob dance video - Me Too - achieved its aim of getting South African talent noticed by Megan Trainor, and went viral all over the world.

Meanwhile Laura Bretan: 13-year-old opera singer gets the golden buzzer - America's Got Talent 2016 Auditions gave viewers goosebumps with Laura's incredible version of Nessun Dorma

It wasn't all light entertainment in the top 10 most-watched videos, however - a road rage incident in Durban also featured. In the video a 4x4 BMW veers off the road after trying to bully a car in the next lane. Also featured in the top 10 was an eNCA Checkpoint episode on Blessers.

Globally, Carpool Karaoke made the Rewind list for the second year. Adele's Carpool Karaoke racked up a whopping 135 million views, making it the most watched YouTube video globally for 2016.

Asian viral hit Piko Taro came in second with 93 million views for Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen/pikotaro and Utah-based father and son duo Daniel and Lincoln Markham's explainer of What's inside a Rattlesnake Rattle? came in third with 59 million views.

YouTube now has more than a billion users - almost one-third of all people on the internet.
