The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), in its “Recommendation for Broadband Wireless Access”, recently formally recommended HC-SDMA as a technology capable of delivering wireless data at broadband rates. Commercially known as iBurst, it is currently available in South Africa, Australia, Ghana, Kenya, Lebanon, Canada, Azerbaijan, Norway and Malaysia.
HC-SDMA (high capacity spatial division multiple access ) is a breakthrough mobile technology using multiple antenna systems to deliver wireless broadband with high spectrum efficiency and low infrastructure costs and was originally developed by ArrayComm and Kyocera .
iBurst has now been recognised by ATIS/ANSI, the ITU, and as a candidate technology within the IEEE802.20 Standard. The ITU is an international organisation within the United Nations system where governments and the private sector coordinate global telecom networks and services.
Thami Mtshali, CEO of iBurst, has welcomed the ITU accreditation of iBurst technology as a vote of confidence in iBurst’s ability to help bridge the digital divide in developing countries such as SA.
Locally, HC-SDMA is the engine driving 138 active base stations across the country. All major metropolitan areas are covered, as are the capitals of all nine provinces and various smaller towns and cities across the country.
The managing executive officer of Kyocera, Eiichi Toriyama, has welcomed the ITU Recommendation, observing that “the spread of this advanced technology into Africa, Europe and America is an exciting development, particularly because it requires far less spectrum and has lower investment risks than other systems that attempt to deliver reliable fully mobile broadband services indoors and out and on the move”.
