ThisDay calls it a day?

25 Oct 2004 14:469 commentsBizLike
ThisDay publisher, Nduka Obaigbena, will address staff and media of ThisDay newspaper later this afternoon, Tuesday. Unless the proprietors of the beleaguered publication can pull off a "scoop" to defend pending liquidation claims and secure new financial backers, it is expected to close.
Widespread media reports on Tuesday - as the daily newspaper failed to appear on the streets as usual - indicated that financial difficulties had come to a head.

The newspaper, barely a year old, attracted some of the best journalists in South Africa, becoming an intellectual read and a fresh alternative to the daily newspaper market.

However, within months of its launch, rumours of financial problems surfaced and the Nigerian-owned newspaper has been beset with controversy over it's circulation figures, the resignation of top management, the deluge of staff leaving in recent months, contributors allegedly not being paid, printers allegedly not being paid, and staff salaries short-changed.

Business Day today reported that the newspaper owes R14 million in unpaid income taxes, its newspaper supplier about R4 million and its pension fund is short by more than R2 million. The report added that ThisDay faced a liquidation application by a creditor in the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday.

ThisDay is sad-
I loved the paper as it provided an excellent alternative to the drivel we are fed by The Star. It's a sad loss and we are poorer for it. Posted on 26 Oct 2004 17:51

Too Bad!-
Not a very good news from the newspaper house, particularly for a tabloid that intends to distinguish itself 'in a strange land' and promises tremendous returns on investment.
Where did they go wrong? Was the feasibilty study done very well?. These and others are questions that need to be answered.

Its not the end - just a restructure-
At a press briefing today, it was said that they will stop printing for the rest of the month and an announcement will be made on Nov1 as to when they will resume.Nduka the publisher gets really bad press, but one should ask if the responsibility is really all his or if some of the blame should be shouldered by the bad management and advisory team who initially promised him the world.(un realistically as it turns out) Posted on 26 Oct 2004 18:55

Not enough differentiation?-
I, too, welcomed an alternative to the Citizen/Star.
However, I wonder how much planning went into the paper before launch regarding direction, differentiation, focus etc. On what basis does ThisDay expect to attract readers from the others? Having a product alone is not enough to make money. The Star and Citizen are entrenched players with a mass market already. Business Day succeeds because it has an obvious focus. ThisDay's differentiation is...? If they have one, I as a potential consumer am not aware of it, and I've bought the paper on occasions. Posted on 27 Oct 2004 09:51

Where are our recently minted billionaires?-

I would have thought that an 'obvious' clique of black investors, will que-up at ThisDay rented offices to take a stake in this business venture but alas! It would have been quite interesting to see these 'entrepreneurs' investing in this brand not only go for tried and tested brands in the marketplace.

This Day - A REAL newspaper-
I think that the imminent closure of the This Day newspaper is not only perhaps indicative of bad financial management / planning per rumours but of the state of our society at large. The fact that tasteless newspapers, of which there are many, are thriving and ejoying large bank balances should be a reflection on the market and not only the internal challenges that This Day faces. I salute all the journalists at This Day for FAIR, RESPONSIBLE and ETHICAL journalism, FAR away from what is available on the streets today. This Day, SOME DAY when news is educative, informed and responsible not in the current sensationalist, selling papers at the expense of the public, media arena. Posted on 2 Nov 2004 10:29
