1000Drawings Cape Town is hosting a series of public doodle sessions at venues across the city, with the next event taking place on the top of Table Mountain this Saturday at 10.30am. The first 100 cable car tickets are free thanks to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway.
All doodle sessions culminate in a one night only exhibition - The Night of a 1000Drawings - which comprises a massive inner city art sale of all doodles collected over the lead up to the event at the Good Hope Centre on Saturday, 28 August 2014. All funds raised will go to upgrading the Thomas Wildschutt School in Retreat with the help of social upliftment enterprises See-Saw-Do, Greenpop and H.E.L.P.
Buyers will be spoilt for choice with doodles, scribbles, graffiti, sketches, watercolour and oil paintings, experimental and conceptual works, all on sale and going for a song. At R100 a piece, you could get your hands on a one of a kind, original work by tomorrow's big stars or something beautiful to make you smile.
Shani Judes, organiser of 1000Drawings CT says: "It's a great honour to be making this happen during 2014 and to be chosen as one of the World Design Capital projects for 2014. Our cause now has the platform it deserves to reach more countries around the world and hopefully inspire other nations and induviduals to do the same to help those in need. 1000Drawings is a very simple concept that can change lives and we hope to encourage everyone, young and old, individuals and companies in Cape Town and the rest of the country to send us their doodles/artworks and be a part of this exciting cause."
The World Design Capital distinction is awarded to cities which recognise design as a tool for social, cultural and economic development. In 2014 Cape Town is hosting over 460 design projects aimed at transforming the city.
Anyone can take part. Well-known celebrities, artists, illustrators, street and tattoo artists are all already busy with their doodles and will be on sale at the main event, The Night of a 1000Drawings. We're also appealing to all advertising agencies, art and design schools and colleges. Individuals can take part in the lead up doodle sessions and there are various drop-off points around the city for those who can't make it. One can also become a doodle ambassador by hosting your own doodle session.
1000Drawings was started in 2006, when the delivery bakkie for the inner city soup kitchen, Paballo ya Batho (Sotho for 'caring for the people') was stolen and suddenly found it near impossible to feed hundreds of homeless people. The Night of a 1000Drawings was born as a fundraising rescue plan. Anyone could donate A5 drawings of anything, which were then sold for R100 each at an inner city art exhibition. This concept has grown and currently runs in six cities around the world including Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam, Tuscany, Belgium, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Cape Town and Dubai.
