In order to create a consistent streetscape look and feel in Tshwane for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and beyond, the Tshwane Street Furniture Consortium, comprising Primedia Outdoor and Street Pole Ads, has signed a R69-million, 10-year contract with the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality to provide modern and attractive new directional street name signs, it was announced yesterday, Monday, 11 August 2008.
The new signage will roll out city wide, including the central business district, as planned prior to the consortium being granted advertising rights.
According to the press statement, Primedia Outdoor's proven record of supplying street name signs in many South African metropolitan areas reinforced Tshwane's decision to accept the tender. As a 2010 FIFA World Cup Host City, Tshwane and the Tshwane Street Furniture Consortium will adhere strictly to FIFA's outdoor advertising requirements.
Intended to benefit residents, consumers, foreign diplomats and international tourists, the new signs should make it easier for people to navigate their way to Tshwane's retail hubs, public amenities, tourist attractions and accommodation venues.
"Internally illuminated street signs mainly located in metropolitan areas provide directional signage and at the same time allow for impactful branding 24-hours a day, making them ideal for retail businesses," said S'khumbuzo Nkosi, CEO of Primedia Outdoor. "Businesses wishing to promote their products and services will benefit from the medium."
As a responsible corporate citizen, Primedia Outdoor is ensuring this project adds value by uplifting members of the local community. "We have employed local sub-contractors, Vhukile Welding Works and Baeteledi Pele, to assist with the installation and maintenance of the units," Nkosi explained.
The signage will assist with the rollout of selected Tshwane street name changes, and, important to ratepayers, the costs are borne by Primedia Outdoor, not the municipality.
10 year contract...not much room for enterprising?-
Wow...a 10 year contract does not open the door for other fully fledged suppliers out there. For such a significant event (2010) you would think our government and its affiliates practice an enterprise building model for new business where service vendors/suppliers undergo review to test their competency at least every two to three years. Granting a 10 year contract to one service provider (even one with a positive track record) decreases the playing field for other equally competitive businesses. Posted on 12 Aug 2008 15:54
