Tumi Makgabo has resigned as the communications and international relations manager of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee (OC) South Africa, the (OC) announced late on this afternoon, Friday, 29 February 2008.
“We have accepted Tumi's resignation. She has made a sterling contribution to the Organising Committee and we wish her well in her future endeavors,” said the OC's CEO, Danny Jordaan in a terse statement.
Makgabo has been a broadcaster for over a decade and was previously the host of CNN's Inside Africa programme.
“I have enjoyed working with the Organising Committee and believe the 2010 FIFA World Cup will be a resounding success. I am, however, looking forward to focusing on the other projects I have been involved in,” said Makgabo.
I have always thought she was way out of her depth for this kind of position. She is a fantastic news anchor, very articulate but not yet "ripe" for 2010. I hope to see her on SABC 3's 10 pm news. The bulletin has never been the same since Lerato Mbele left for CNBC AFRICA. Posted on 1 Mar 2008 11:24
I agree, the woman is avery good news anchor but Communications Manager I am not sure...I mean sending invites to journalists by fax the morning of the conference???? Posted on 3 Mar 2008 09:11
i don't understand your take that tumi was not ready for 2010, since this is the first for south africa, can you tell me who has the experience, harambe 24? Posted on 3 Mar 2008 18:50
faxing an invite? on the day of a conference???????-
If she really did fax an invite on the day of an event she is clearly way out of depth. It is shocking that some people dont see anything wrong with that. Not so much the faxing (though it is a bit tatty) but on the day of the event!!!!! Posted on 4 Mar 2008 12:24
i think mazaza is taking what i said out of context, who can blame you? what i meant, when i said she was not ready for 2010, has more refrence to the position she was holding. Tumi is bright, but she is not a PR marketing person, she doesnt cut it and thats probably why she left. Read the article, 2010 LOC being petty By: Chris Moerdyk, those are my sentiments too. keep well and keep the debate going. Posted on 4 Mar 2008 16:01
i won't read chris's take on this,he probably has his own take, all i want is to engage with you on your take without making any references to some 'marketing gurus' not unless your argument wont stand on its own. my understanding is that there are challenges in that little organisation put together to steer the 2010 event,i don't think that LOC would have taken people who are not up to scratch to do the job irrespective of what your intellectual-cruches such as chris says. i have read other comments, oh my, i think people are just bitter but i can't really pinpoint why, all we have are just hearsays that she faxed some invites on the day of some event...and i cant really think that tumi didn't have the support staff that she had to fax those invites in the first place. hawu phd's bakithi?! Posted on 4 Mar 2008 18:40
It just shows something is just not right with our LOC. All the best to Tumi, however I would love to know the reasons behind her resignation. I wonder who is next. I agree Tumi is one of the finest anchors I know. Posted on 1 Mar 2008 15:29
This is a testimony to the old argument that journo's will not make good comm's exec. Go well Tum's and do what you know best journalism.
To be frank this was a difficult job for you and my suggestion is that the LOC's must find a suitable and experienced individual to drive this. Forget celebrities - this job is not about a known face, but is about delivering the goods.
Today there is not even a single campaign that shows that RSA is hosting 2010. The public knows that the country is hosting 2010, but they are not influenced to behave in a certain way that indicates we are hosting 2010. Good bye Tum's. Posted on 4 Mar 2008 10:58
Tumi was not a journo; she was just a plain news anchor. Whatever diploma she did for journalism course, she was never good at it, though as a radio anchor with SAfm where "cute" uppity accent she wowed white listeners who then approved this black talking in a "civilised" manner. At SABC anyone with a nice, uppity accent that apes white English is good enough to read the news, regardless whether one has got the brains or not (otherwise we wouldn't be getting the idiotic news anchors taht populate SABC), but then again, news anchors are a good as secretaries, or what is now euphimistically called PA; they shouldn't have the brains to think. Then CNN cherry-picked this better "educated" black who showed, just post-apartheid, that at least not all blacks are illiterates and can talk decent English if taught out of their barbarian darkness. Like all the coconuts, Tumi was just a "social genetic experiment". So your "proof" about journos not able to handle plain PR or exec is plain nonsense. Look at the number of ex-journos in the world who started their own exceddingly succesful PR companies, are successful entrepreneurs, successful CEs, successful politicians, etc. I wonder how much nonsense you generate with your inane "proofs". and tasking them with driving communications for the LOC was a very bad idea in the first place. Thanks for going Tumi. You have succesfully had ZERO impact in the LOC - other than the odd commentary here and there...best they employ a good enough person who is capable of driving the 2010 message to the people. and that is not the role of a celebrity, these individuals know zilch about strategy. South Africa wake up. there are so many people out there who have the ability and expertise to do the job. it is not about the sweet voices and accents it is about delivery. as comms manager of the LOC she has done absolutely zilch in the how many years she has been there? Posted on 4 Mar 2008 12:59
This is what I meant exactly...do people still fax invites? I mean what happened to creativity people?
She is good at what she does best ...news anchoring...to this day i have not seen any good campaign leading to what is gonna be the most prestigious event in Africa. Posted on 4 Mar 2008 14:44
This is so true, when journalists do a cross over to PR they struggle. It's hard for them to adjust properly, as they dont really understand the PR jargon and the way things operate and they are not briefed well as to how things work in the PR industry Posted on 4 Mar 2008 15:00
As if you will execute the Job better than her....shame on you. All the best Tumza...we miss Talk with Tumi Makgabo...any chances of going back????? Posted on 4 Mar 2008 17:39
There must be too much drama in that LOC and up till someone comes up and let the public know whats really going on we will forever be left in the dark. As for Danny appointing Tumi Makgabo, it was a wise move Mr Jordan as i believe you were looking for someone who is internationally exposed and I don't think Tumi was a dissapointment as others would like us to believe. All the Best my dear....you are one of the best Anchors keep it up!!!!! Posted on 5 Mar 2008 09:08
The fine art of being nice when one leaves a top position-
What's new? Whenever a person quits a top job, they act nicely, and issue the usual statements that we have read over and over again. Going off to start other projects, we appreciate your work, pursue other interests, or need to spend more time with family, etc, What about the truth for a change? Instead of getting the job done, often this job is denied to other passionate and hard-working candidates, South Africans play the man or woman and not the ball. Posted on 11 Mar 2008 06:42
Yolanda Cuba, Tumi Makgabo ,the Editor of M G and others thank you for Putting S.A on the Map by being Africa’s top young leaders. Well done guys! Posted on 14 Mar 2008 13:08
