New crowdsourcing site offers design opportunities

12 Apr 2011 12:089 commentsBizLike
With 450 degrees, a newly launched web-based crowdsourcing design site, the intention is to make finding designers for design project easier in South Africa. Clients create a brief, provide feedback and choose from one of SA's many talented designers, and can decide exactly how much it will cost, when they design the project.
The online community gives users the opportunity to work with dozens of talented designers and to choose from various custom designs. The site also allows designers to register and review clients' needs, budget and timelines.

450degrees seeks to promote and encourage local and national talent and allow young individuals the opportunity to build their portfolios and gain the experience. It charges a project hosting, fee plus a small design commission.

Value of design?-
A business card for R350? C'mon... Posted on 13 Apr 2011 12:19

Dont be discouraged-
I remember when oDesk started out, they had no work, no advertising and there system was less than satisfactory. I am glad someone is chosing the South African market, albeit smaller, but in a vibey country like that it is sure to do well. @Katie, I looked into it, you can adjust the project up or down from R 350.00 - no limits on the upbound value. @Alison, dont slam start up companies by using success stories - anyone can do that, there are a lot of these sites that are in operation - and all seem to be doing well. Shameful!-
These people should be ashamed of themselves. They have quite obviously never been designers. R450 for a Logo?!!!! And to add insult to injury it seems that you have to do the work first and then if the 'client' likes your stuff amongst all the other submitted work then you get paid. . Time is obviously not money as they say... Posted on 7 May 2011 12:56

Un true-
This is un-true, as the client who is giving out the project can elect to go from R 450.00 to R 50000.00 for the project. Thus, it is the client who descides, not http://www.450degrees.co.za Posted on 8 May 2011 11:19

True-
Yes John, I get it. The more the client offers the more designers will compete for the job blah blah. My point is that it is insinuated to the potential client that they could possibly get the job for R450. If the client decides how much why have a 'from' price anyway - just ask for offers/briefs. I have actually had a client ask for a logo for R500 before and a site like this just encourages that kind of thinking and devalues design. And so does pitching for work... or perhaps I have that part wrong too? Posted on 8 May 2011 16:25

An adjustment of thinking.-
Bev I understand your concerns, however this site is targeted at clients who would enjoy the concept of it, and run with the project themselves. I am a client on there site and I will be using them again, I have always pushed the prices up and have suggested they take the 'base starting price' to a more 'international' price level, probably $150 (R670+-) for logo at minimum... I know I wouldnt pay less thant $250 for a logo because i want quality (and have got it thus far because i opt for more)...however I dont know the South African market.

I would suggest that if you dont like a concept then dont use it, however in this case, its worth a shot I have found. Posted on 8 May 2011 22:36
Supply and demand-
Use them if you want... And if you are happy with the service, use them again. If you prefer to go through an established design studio with a string of awards behind their name, that is your choice as well. Posted on 9 May 2011 08:47
@ bev-
Couldn't have said it better myself :) I am a designer and I avoid spec work. You don't get a lawyer to pitch for your business or a doctor Posted on 9 May 2011 09:00
