Big Blue t-shirt design winner announced

19 Oct 2009 10:328 commentsBizLike
Big Blue announced today, Monday 19 October 2009, that Thandeka Bobani has won this year's annual Makhulu Polane t-shirt design competition with the design ‘Boy with a Wheel.' Special mention also goes to Ivana Raguz (Hold Africa High) and Louis Minnaar (Far, far away) as their designs were very close contenders.

Thandeka Bobani’s winning design - ‘Boy with a Wheel’.

Ivana Raguz’s ‘Hold Africa High’ won a special mention.

Louis Minnaar’s ‘Far, far away’ was also awarded a special mention.
The competition, created in 2006 by Big Blue to discover and support local design talent, received over 600 submissions, from which the top 50 were drawn.

Bobani wins R20 000 in cash and her t-shirts, bearing the winning design will be sold in all Big Blue and Kitsch & Kool stores during November and December. She is currently studying a bridging course in graphic design at Learn to Earn in Khayelitsha and it's her dream to study further and become a fully fledged designer one day. Let's hope the R20 000 she's won can help her fulfil her dream

The standard of entries received in this year's Makhulu Polane t-shirt design competition was very high. Many of the submissions for the ‘Love Africa' theme were from professionals/ freelance/ experienced graphic designers, as well as design school students.

James Robertson from Big Blue says, “Now in its fourth year, the competition seems to be gaining credibility as an annual feature on SA's design calendar. This year it was good to note how much work has gone into every design. We received full-scale artworks, embroideries, paintings and computer generated images. In addition to t-shirt prints, we have also received fabric designs and some finely detailed work suitable for stationery or gift-wrap. The good news is that there is large pool of promising design talent in South Africa.”

relevance-
I do not see what relevance these designs have on the brief "Love Africa". There were so many other great designs that accurately depict the "Love" we have for Africa as people born and bred here, these winning designs look like typical everyday African t-shirt designs aimed at the consumer & tourists. very disappointing Posted on 19 Oct 2009 16:48
I'm afraid I have to agree...-
... perhaps someone from Elle or Marie Claire or a stylist would like to choose one that they would feature in a shoot...it would be interesting, i don't really think I would wear any of them : ( Posted on 19 Oct 2009 19:04

Yes-
It has relevance to Big Blue, it has relevance to the Theme, it has relevance to simple T shirt graphics and its relevant to international T shirt graphic styles. That's why we selected it. Posted on 20 Oct 2009 06:44

Uninspired-
Some great designs in the top 50 (I love "Papa Africa" by Ruth Unwin), but overall I was expecting more originality - using the continent is such a given and too typical.

The winning design is a bit dull... Posted on 19 Oct 2009 22:56
I wouldn't even use a gift voucher to buy these t-shirts-
600 + entries and they choose these three, you say design alive and well - more like the ones we think would sell more stock, make voting open to the public instead of having blind judges cast the deciding vote :( look forward to seeing these in bargain bin at Big Blue stores Posted on 20 Oct 2009 00:23

Commercial Value-
We select designs that have real commercial value. Some of the 'arty' crowdsourced designs simply don't sell in our stores.

We were also looking for something other that the standard Hearts and Africa combos, these are original T shirts designs.

The T shirt design has to be visible on a moving fabric base, from at least three feet away, some of the tortured artworks we receive may look good on a 'trends' PowerPoint presentation but honestly not on a big blue T shirt.

In this industry we realise there will always be the naysayers. We started the Makhulu Polane comp in an effort to attract new, undiscovered, original SA talent...our stores don't offer the stock standard commercial fare.

Honestly, we're thrilled with the designs we've received and we've discovered plenty of new, young, SA talent. Thanks to all the designers who took the time to submit their entries :) Posted on 20 Oct 2009 06:55
personality and hard work-
As a designer myself in the fashion industry and very other aspects of the industry ( who did'nt enter ) I'm excited to see that their are many interesting styles that compare and fare to the international standard of design. We should be proud that our diverse nation is able to freely express themselves through a competition like this and it seems the judges have decided to go with heartfelt unique designs that they obviously believe encompassed their idea of ' Love Africa' . I cannot wait to see those designs in Big Blue. Posted on 20 Oct 2009 09:32
design or not-
I think they are very cool, as well as most of the other top 50. The maps of Africa ice cream not so much..... Posted on 20 Oct 2009 10:09
