Louis Minnaar, a third-year student at The Open Window School of Visual Communication, took the honours in the animation category at the MNet EDiT online awards ceremony on May 9.
Talented Louis, who majors in Animation at the school, regularly exhibits his illustrations and comics and featured in an article of the magazine, One Small Seed, last year.
”Henri”, the four-minute production Louis submitted for the MNet EDiT online competition, was inspired in mood and style by 2D animations like “The triplets of Belleville” and “Le Building”. The story is about Henri, a bellboy at La Macabre hotel, who was left deserted after the staff and guests mysteriously disappeared one day. The paranoid character is faced with his imaginings and fears. The result is that of a character created to look as if he was conceived in two-dimensional space yet he functions in a three-dimensional world. With this production Louis combined both 2D and 3D in an attempt to break away from some trends in animation in terms of character design, stylistic approach and subject matter.
“Henri” and the other category winners can be viewed on MNet's website.
