The past year has seen many successes for the Illustration Department at The Open Window School of Visual Communication. Besides winning competitions, the students created designs for several exciting projects. The two projects of public interest were the design of the official Soccer World Cup 2010 stamp series and the Wetlands Conservation poster and calendar design.
Students design the official 2010 soccer world cup stamps:The South African Post Office approached The Open Window School of Visual Communication to design a stamp/stamp series to celebrate the 2010 Soccer World Cup, hosted by South Africa. Second and third year Illustration students, under the guidance of lecturer and artist Lizl Roos, presented the Philately Department with so many excellent designs that the adjudicators found it very difficult to choose the final stamp.
The adjudicators selected a stamp design from Tamrin Skead to be issued in 2007 and a design from second year Michelle Beukes of a wild dog standing on a soccer ball, representing Africa, to be issued in 2008. This is just one of the successes for Michelle in a range of visual fields over the last few months. Besides the postage stamp design for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, her photographs of horses appeared in Look Away, a magazine that showcases up-and-coming artistic talent, and so has her comic strip about Jimi Hendrix.
Students design the annual wetlands calendar:The Open Window was also approached by The Wetlands Society with an illustration project to design a poster and calendar for their 2007 Wetlands conservation campaign, "Fish for Tomorrow".

The illustration second year students created, after research under the guidance of artist Lizl Roos, beautiful imagery that was published in a calendar. This non profit awareness campaign to preserve the wetlands of South Africa will be featured on the conservation program 50/50 (SABC 2).
