The PG Bison 1.618 competition and awards launches the 2014 brief

The PG Bison 1.618 Competition and Awards has launched its 2014 brief. This brief will see interior design and architecture students from around the country submit their designs for the remodel of the modern extension of the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) in Joubert Park.
Although JAG's modern extension is still structurally sound, in recent years a lack of funding and maintenance has led to extensive water damage throughout and as a result the space is unusable. As the 2014 brief is based on the real-life situation facing JAG, submitted entries stand a chance of being used in the redesign of the modern exhibition space. Potentially, students' designs could live on in the architectural history of Johannesburg's public buildings.

With the guidance of architect Kate Otten and JAG's Chief Curator Antoinette Murdoch, next year's brief has been written with a specific focus on heritage and community. Students will be faced with the additional challenge of incorporating an income generator into the space, as well as a reception area in which to host events.

There are some incredible additions to next year's prizes! The winner and their lecturer will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Milan, Italy to attend the 2015 Furniture Fair, as well as the coveted Steinhobel trophy. The second-place winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the 2015 Design Indaba in Cape Town plus a R3000 cash prize. The third-place winner will receive a R10,000 cash prize, and the remaining seven Top Ten Finalists will receive R2000 in cash each. The first and third-place winners, along with the seven unplaced Top Ten Finalists, will each be given the opportunity to attend the 2015 Design Indaba Simulcast.

Road Shows presenting the brief to students will begin in February 2014, so institutions intending on participating in next year's Competition should get in-touch with the Competition and Awards office to arrange a date.

The 2014 Judging Panel will be announced early in the new year, with some exciting new additions and highly-respected personalities making up the panel.
