Carling Black Label launches new ad campaign

29 May 2005 10:1912 commentsBizLike
In an ill-timed press release entitled "Carling Black Label Flies High" - released on the day of the Constitutional Court judgment in favour of Laugh it Off T-shirt 'Black Labour' which parodied SAB brand, Black Label - the new Carling Black Label commercial which broke this weekend, was profiled.

Developed by South African Breweries in conjunction with Ogilvy Cape Town, 'it takes the brand into an exciting new space' the press release simpered.

Based on a true story, the ad follows two workmen who spot a small plane in trouble around dusk just outside their town. Thinking quickly, they organize their friends to clear a makeshift runway, which they manage to illuminate with their car headlights just in time to help the aircraft land. They then rescue the pilot before celebrating their achievement with Carling Black label.

Shot in early evening light over six days in the Malmesbury and Durbanville areas north of Cape Town, filming was very difficult with the story requiring expert stunt flying and the use of a helicopter to capture the action in the air.

"Making a film that was true to the power of a wonderful script was quite a challenge, but with thorough pre-planning and the involvement of some very talented people we think we pulled it off," says Carling Black Label Brand Manager, Julian Remba.

"The muscles and physical achievement are still there but this commercial captures the true heroism of being a man in a new way for the brand," added Geoff Whyte, Brand Marketing Manager of South African Breweries.

Time will tell if this commercial allows the brand to put behind it, this high profile and long drawn out 'David and Goliath' epic court battle between SAB, one of the biggest brewers globally, and the T-shirt company that was started by students.

Bandwidth?!-
Bandwidth costs money in South Africa... you will have to wait until there is more competition before you start asking for downloads! Posted on 30 May 2005 22:25

Here's a great idea for a new Carling ad-
Here's what they should do. Make an ad about a small group of hardworking ordinary guys just trying to make a living doing something innovative like ....ummm .....I dunno, let just say humourous t-shirts .... Anyway, they get jumped on by a megalomaniac multinational bully, but they rise to the challenge and win the day ......
Seriously though I applaud them for not just getting on with their business of selling their beer, underwhelming ad or not. Posted on 31 May 2005 08:28

New Carling ad...-
And then do you show this bunch of t-shirt guys celebrating their constitutional court victory over a table full of Carlings? I love it - pitch it to the agency at once, its hilarious :) Posted on 31 May 2005 10:07

Carling Black Label should ride the tide-
Given the battle for free speech and the fact that each time one sees a Black Label advert one remembers the joke, I would use the controversy to rebuild the Black Label brand.

After a reverting personal story, of how SABMiller has made a made difference in someone's life by helping that person move from being a cleaner to something more - through their social responsibility.

At the end Jack (the empowered person) will say "Where would I be if Black Label did not empower Black Labour" and the bi-line will say. "Black Label making a difference for the Black Labour"

This would have to be intellegently done, well researched and very balanced as it has potential to offend - but if well thought it can be done. Posted on 31 May 2005 11:55
GREAT IDEA!! -
nice spin on the whole controversy- i like!! perfect example of looking at the glass as half full instead of half empty. Posted on 31 May 2005 12:30

???-
I like the way you think Anne, very sharp. If your idea was meant as a cynical joke, then well done. However if it was meant seriously, then I have to say that its insane. You're recommending that Carling now do an ad about how difficult it must have been for some students to come up with an idea thats left them looking like a bunch of 'black labour' opportunists. Think it would'nt be a bad ad for a competitor beer tho. Posted on 31 May 2005 13:45
