A cheeky poster campaign from Saatchi for YDE

22 Feb 2005 16:5535 commentsBizLike
Young Designers Emporium, better known as YDE, has embarked on a somewhat cheeky and controversial poster campaign to introduce their brand 'spanking' new fashion to consumers.
YDE Managing Director, Paul Simon, and Creative Director, Sam Coleman, had a very specific brief in mind for the team at Saatchi & Saatchi Cape Town: to introduce the new fashion season in a fresh, irreverent way that would appeal to a retail audience.

"The YDE brand is inspiring," says Conn Bertish, Creative Director of Saatchi & Saatchi Cape Town. "It promotes fresh thinking and fresh design with a healthy dose of playful sexiness. Who wouldn't want to get spanky with it?"

The "Brand Spanking New Fashion" poster campaign depicts a girl and a guy with red spank marks in strategic places. The scene is very playful, sexy and retro-romantic with funky furniture, bedding and old school wallpaper, says Saatchi.

"The intention is not to shock," says MD, Paul Simon. "I think the reaction we are after is for people to see that we go out of our way to communicate what could sometimes be dull sales messages in a unique way that is always entertaining. We try to have fun and be clever and people appreciate that. We don't take ourselves too seriously and neither should the public," he commented.

Three variations of the poster have been created by Saatchi & Saatchi Cape Town and will be displayed in store windows of all 12 YDE outlets nationally for a period of eight weeks from today, 23 February 2005. Further to the posters, YDE will be giving away "Brand Spanking New Fashion" key rings to the first 400 customers to enter their stores during this period and patrons will also be able to play a "spanking" game on YDE's website, www.yde.co.za.

"We feel that the end product from the agency fits the brief nicely and that it will go a long way in achieving our goal. We find that when we communicate in a surprising way, it automatically drives word of mouth, which ultimately drives sales," concluded Simon.

fuddy duddy-
YDE for as long as i've noticed has been very bizarre (for want of a better word) in their advertising, why should this be any different. it's a fun brand and the advertising shouldn't be afraid to be fun too. i think it's cool. and it's not like women are the only one's getting spanked, there's a man there too, you don't hear men b@#$ing and moaning about it encouraging abuse towards them. stop being a wet blanket and just chill out and try this, spread your lips out sideways, open your mouth to the point where your teeth are showing and let out a sound (they call it a laugh and it implies you have a sense of humour) trust me it feels and looks better than those wrinkles forming on your forehead. PLAGIARIST Saatchi & YDE Devoid of Fresh Ideas-
What a RIP-OFF of an innovative creative thought! Considering that the "idea" is supposed to reflect "fresh" thinking etc., any viewer of MTV will immediately recognize this concept. Once again the local community proves that they need to copy and steal "imported" thinking! I would be too shy to admit to having produced this. Posted on 24 Feb 2005 05:53

I think you forgot something.-
You need to learn the difference between an idea and an execution lad. Spanking has been used in many advertisements over the years. I myself have dabbled in the nether regions with a paddle in hand, but that certainly doesn't mean I own the creative /moral rights to the reproduction of the practise. Posted on 24 Feb 2005 13:54

Dear Mr French sir-

nice 1 ADMAN-
how could you honestly compare the work produced by YDE to a bunch of mountain dwelling rednecks spanking each other. and to top it off they are brothers. thats pretty sick man. i think your ripoff comment is kinda a leap if u ask me dude. Posted on 28 Feb 2005 17:34

If your not secure with yourself, don't read this news story-
Advertisers reflect on the quality of the society in which they live in. Since nobody is really being abused and spankings are featured in a loving (albiet exploitive with the best models) fashion, it isn't a bad thing. Posted on 9 Mar 2005 07:38

KEEP IT UP!-
From one designer to others - this is the fresh and innovative thinking that prevents design becoming stagnant! It`s fresh as YDE`s image are, it`s young, humourous and beautifully designed and Art Directed!

And maybe, just maybe the inspiration for this came from somewhere i.e. MTV but any good and confident designer wil tell you that inspiration is all around us - it`s making it your own, that is the trick! And they made this idee there own - one look and you know it`s YDE...

WELL DONE!

So "fresh" it stinks -
No fresh ideas there... the s&m thing has been done to death by diesel, now this, what if they just let that beautifull girl bend-over as provocativly as she is, with maybe her hand on her ass in a bed of flowers. Hmmm hmm now wouldnt that be nice.... Posted on 24 Feb 2005 08:15

I would not like to see this is at my local shopping centre - would love to have the YDE brand - but this may be a bit OTT for a family oriented shopping environment. Posted on 24 Feb 2005 16:20

Are you feeling it????-
Well, although I too have reservations concerning the communication of any unique insight about the brand, they do evoke an emotional reaction... as visible from everyone's comments. Which, as we know, is the cornerstone of any good advertising... Specially since I imagine that at least 80% of the clothing retail marketing is women. I've rarely met a woman who doesn't have a strong emotional experience when shopping. Retail therapy anyone? Posted on 24 Feb 2005 17:54

too old for this?-
mmmm i think we get too old to realize what the majority of young people base there ideas on! music videos, etc is all about being SEXXXY, yep, thats what young people want to be, vibey and funky they want to look 'hot' and 'sexy'. i dont agree with it, but if thats what makes yde sell then so be it! Cheap and nasty-
I have always thought the concept of YDE is fresh and inovative. This branding/marketing/advertising campaign "Spanking new fashion" is irresponsible, tacky and offensive. As a woman I am offended. As a citizen who works with children and a shopper I am concerned that the impressionable youth of today are influenced by fashion advertising and branding. The youth form your target market as they are the shoppers of tomorrow. The message perceived by them even if unintended is not a healthy one.

It is clear that YDE is completely out of touch with South Africa and its many social issues. I understand that fashion is your business and social issues are clearly not a concern of YDE, but perhaps it should be. This is one shopper that will not be visiting your stores again. unwittingly illustrates problem with spanking kids-
Four years ago, a Canadian school principal was busted for posessing child pornography. Specifically, he collected pictures of children being spanked. Turns out he'd also spanked a number of students during his career.
In 2002, the FBI broke up a nationwide child-spanking pornography ring. A few of its members even made films using their own kids, who could be heard tearfully pleading their innocence.

Now, it's not really news that spanking can take on sexual overtones, as anyone who's seen "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" can tell you. If you doubt it, just type "spanking" into a search engine and see what kind of results you get. And since there are people out there who are sexually drawn to children, it figures that some would enjoy spanking them.

Tragically for many victims, though, society has mostly failed to recognize the potential for sex abuse in the practice of spanking children or even young adults. Perpetrators often deflect suspicion simply by playing the discipline card.

It's high time we woke up to this problem. You can learn more at www.nospank.net/101.htm and www.nopaddle.com. Posted on 10 Mar 2005 06:28
Childhood trauma ...-
is still alive in the psyches of this ad campaign's creators. Adults can choose to be spanked by their sexual partners, yet children are hit by people much bigger than they are, and it creates a lot of fear and anger. This ad campaign is irresponsible. It condones a practice that is harmful to children, and makes light of it. YDE should end this ad campaign and issue an apology. Posted on 10 Mar 2005 00:06

what's the big deal?-
I am part of fairly large group of friends, a mixture of females and males, early to middle twenties. most of us have descent jobs and have an interest in good fashion.
The spanking idea really caught my attention because we have an ongoing game while partying which involves some playful spanking (with our hands!). I must say, i certainly don't mind a playful spank from one of my lovely girl friends, and they enjoy a good spank themselves every now and then!
When i saw the ad, i sent it on to all my mates and everyone loves it! no one has had any flashbacks to childhood beatings, and everyone's going for the highest score.
If YDE was hoping to target young men and women with disposable incomes and an interest in fashion, they've done an excellent job! Life is fun, don't be offended by something a little daring. Posted on 15 Mar 2005 12:35

...and if the ad showed sex...-
...would you claim it was condoning pedophillia?

People spanking non-consenting people is despicable (people spanking non consenting, far smaller, people is beyond words) but a little friendly spanking between consenting friends, as the ad suggests, has nothing to do with children, and can be terribly good for you...and fun... GOOD ADVERTISING-
I think this ad is fantastic and hits the target market brilliantly. Congrats! To all the negative response, guys come on - lighten up! Where's your sense of humour? This is not irresponsible advertiseing at all - it's fun and meant to generate a laugh and it does. It also does what it's meant to - ADVERTISE. Everyone is going to be speaking about YDE and this advert whether it's seen as good or bad. YDE is going to be everyone's lips - therefore - GOOD ADVERTISING!!! Posted on 15 Mar 2005 10:46

I could give you a good leather paddle for this-
Hello,

If you wish I could send your company a nice hard leather paddle for you to redden there buttocks with. It would introduce some colour to the scene.

safe sane consensual note-

they might add a "S.S.C." note at the bottom of their posters to illustrate the safe sane consensual practice of spanking. Posted on 26 Mar 2005 18:49
