The return of Mike Abel

3 Nov 2009 09:3012 commentsBizLike
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: Mike Abel, currently Australian CEO of M&C Saatchi and former COO of Ogilvy South Africa, will be returning to South Africa mid December 2009 for family reasons and launching M&C Saatchi offices in Cape Town and Johannesburg, to be known as M&C Saatchi Abel, in February 2010.
The move comes barely a year after his move to Australia. Comments Abel, “Family reasons have necessitated my return and given this, it has also provided the opportunity to do something new and rather special.”

“Mike is an outstanding leader and we understand he must go back; however, this development means we will have someone who is already highly regarded in the local marketplace,” says Tom Dery, worldwide chairman M&C Saatchi and who will take up the position of acting CEO Australia following Abel's move.

“Ideally suited”

“Mike has a unique skill set - combining local knowledge, an understanding of the M&C Saatchi culture, and an excellent agency background - and is hence ideally suited to establish us in South Africa.”

Moray McLennan, worldwide CEO of M&C Saatchi, says he had been considering the South African market as a next home for M&C Saatchi Agency for some time.

“I cannot think of anyone else in our network who we would trust more than Mike Abel with a start-up venture. We have complete faith in his ability and we are pleased to keep him in the M&C Saatchi fold.”

Especially in digital and mobile

Abel says he has loved working at M&C Australia and picked up terrific additional experience, especially in the digital and mobile space. “I am looking forward to the fabulous opportunity that lies ahead - to establishing a presence for the agency in South Africa, a market I know extremely well,” he adds.

Both Dery and Abel are eagerly anticipating taking up emerging opportunities in the southern hemisphere marketplace and to continuing their strong association.

Abel, who spent 15 years at Ogilvy South Africa, is a regular Bizcommunity.com contributor.

M&C Saatchi becomes MorrisJones & Company
M&C Saatchi have changed their business arrangements in South Africa from a wholly owned agency to locally owned affiliation.
This move reflects the desire of the South African founders, Nina Morris and Angel Jones to have more control of the development of the business in the future. The newly formed MorrisJones Agency has acquired 100% of the share capital in the agency, which was founded in January 2001 and whose clients include "no frills airline" Kulula.com, BA/Comair, Hollard Insurance and Finance Week/F&T. Billings are R32 million and the agency ranks 21 in the South African market.

M&C Saatchi will continue its affiliation with MorrisJones & Company for its international clients.

M&C Saatchi has this year opened new offices in Shanghai and Tokyo and is also set to expand its business on the West Coast of America in Los Angeles.

morrisjones&co-
morrisjones&co have been operating independently from M&C Saatchi for nearly 7 years, so for us, it's business as usual. As one of the last independent agencies in the country, we thrive on our freedom.

And, as founders of the Homecoming Revolution, we're delighted to welcome another talent back home.
