Stunts are dangerous. Getting a car to ramp 35 metres for a commercial is not recommended. Having the driver get in and out the car whilst in the air is just plain crazy. For Wicked Pixels, it was just another day at the office, but how did they do it?
New Releases Just launched is the new adrenalin-filled Hyundai Tucson commercial via
The Jupiter Drawing Room CT; CD Livio Tronchin with creative team Jonathan Commerford and Lucas Van Vuuren, Head of TV Production, Ruth De Vantier Chowles and Senior Producer Collette Cruywagen, Account Manager Myles Hopper, directed by Craig Wessels and produced by Dennis Dyas and Magda Roets, all of Wicked Pixels, with DOP Rob Malpage behind the camera.
International freestyle motocross rider,
Nick de Wit, aka “Sick Nick” and crew were brought in to perform the bike jumps. Sick Nick is a member of
Red Bull's elite X-Fighters freestyle team, and lived up to his name, performing some insane, heart-stopping tricks. Stunt driver Danie Sandenbergh and ex-SA racing champ, Deon Joubert (
The Good Guys) were tasked to detail and ramp the Tucson.
Being a VFX intensive job, Craig ('08 D&AD winner for MTN ‘Stickies') chose to shoot on the new
Red One film format, which is a very hi-res digital body using the same lenses as a 35mm camera. Craig comments,
“Pioneering new technology is always risky, but we did our homework and really understand what the incredible Red format can achieve, and the workflow it requires in post; which is quite daunting to the uninitiated. But more importantly, it allowed us to be more creative and build amazing shots that would otherwise not have been possible using traditional film.”Livio Tronchin, Creative Director at TJDR CT, was really enthusiastic about the production;
"This was undoubtedly the most fun I've had on a shoot in many, many years. The idea is fun, although clearly a technical challenge. And Wicked made it work. I don't think we could have imagined it to have gone better. From pre-production through shoot to animation and post, the process was handled expertly, collaboratively and with fastidious care. The result is a product that's slick, memorable and, most importantly, continues to help us move the brand to new heights. This is the way creative business should be done. Craig rocks. Wicked rocks." Not wanting to give the game away at this early stage though, Wicked isn't yet revealing exactly how they managed to achieve the stunts.
