Creative Circle scraps current points system

16 Sep 2008 10:4513 commentsBizLike
The Creative Circle executive committee has decided unanimously to do away with the existing creative points system, but not an official creative circle agency table, Rob McLennan, chairman of the Creative Circle, clarified to members in an email yesterday, Monday, 15 September 2008.
McLennan pointed out that the circle is not abandoning its ranking, just the points, and that quality and quantity will now have equal weighting. Reasons given for the new system are:

Firstly, one of the reason's the points system was created was because various publications and others in the industry were creating their own points list which differed from each other, which created a bunch of confusion in the marketplace. So the idea was to standardise the points for all the endorsed awards festivals, and then for the creative circle to take ownership of that and release a yearly table by agency group and immediately after every endorsed award.

Clearly, this year, even with our points system, much confusion and, ahem, debate reigned post the last Loerie awards. The points system was interpreted in a number of different permutations by the industry and the agency groups, depending on how an agency or agency group wanted to swing it, compounded by the fact that an initial different Loerie points list was sent out first, followed by an official Creative Circle one.

Also, as everyone has pointed out, there has been a growing obsession with the point list. There has been debate over the points system and group vs. individual agency ranking than pretty much anything else at the exco's [sic], as opposed to figuring out how to make the work better. There have been more complaints over the amount of awards versus quality versus amount of points versus etc. than ever before.

So after seeing the Olympics table in the morning paper a little while ago, it struck us that their table is simple, works universally, without language, without caveats and explanations, and realised we'd possibly overcomplicated the issues with regards to the complex, interpretive, statistically heavy points system. By scanning the Olympic results table, one can immediately pick up who is the overall winner, and who has won the most golds, silvers etc, leaving everyone with a much clearer picture of who the strongest agency is in terms of quantity and quality.

MLennan stated that the Creative Circle will still endorse the same list of awards, which at this stage remains the same. It will also release a ratified table per endorsed award and an official yearly table from the Creative Circle for publishing, (including the Loeries awards). All of the award results will be issued and ranked as an agency group and then again as an individual agency.

The existing points system will remain until the end of the calendar year.

On another planet entirely!-
The Creative Circle exists on another planet entirely & its awards & subsequent points ratings, however these are constructed, are about as relevant to the efficiency and performance of advertising as a brain dead dung beatle's contribution to the furtherance of neuroscience! The BALCK
Hear hear-
ha ha ha ha :) these cats don't even know their "industry" is a "dead man walking" and they are debating "creative points" ha ha oh lawd. Posted on 16 Sep 2008 11:39
Actually the Olympics use points - like all other major sports competitions-
The Olympic Games provides 2 ranking tables: one by number of gold medals and one by the total number of medals. For the first table, all gold medals receive 1 point and for the second table all medals receive 1 point. According to the 2008 results China was ranked number one in the first table and the USA number one in the second table. It's anyone's guess which table it's better to be number one at - so the Oylmpic system will not shed any light on Creative Circle rankings going forward and we will probably still see agencies (especially those not ranked at the top) complaining and denegrating the system, while multiple agencies will claim to have won simultaneously.

All other major competitions, including Formula One, soccer, golf, tennis, cricket and rugby use points systems. It seems the only advantage in advocating a system without points is to protect mediocre performances and not highlight great achievements. Long live the mundane! Posted on 16 Sep 2008 11:44
The King Has Spoken-
its weird that the creative circle collectively read the morning paper ("after seeing the Olympics table in the morning paper a little while ago, it struck us..."). or is this a royal we? Posted on 16 Sep 2008 11:47
Silly-
Thats what was so impressive of daddy buy me pony back in the day which showed the Creative Circle is a big wank. They won Golds at Clio's and One Show but were never included in the SA list because they were not a member of the Creative Circle.
Pity they went bang.
But in that period the "self-absorbness" of the Creative Circle was so blatantly clear. A bunch of white guys patting themselves on the shoulders. Posted on 16 Sep 2008 12:44
Zap! Bang! Wow!-
There it is! The race card!
Took a few replies but it finally showed up. No argument is complete without somebody playing that dog-eared card. Let's hear it for the race card, ender of logical arguments. Posted on 16 Sep 2008 12:50
Nelly
Zap! Bang! Wow!-
An there someone engages it, and than I engage it, than you engage me AND that is the ender of any logical argument! Posted on 16 Sep 2008 17:07
SOMEONE RESCUE THESE PEOPLE FROM THEMSELVES...!-
Has anyone analyzed that line: '...quality and quantity will now have equal weighting'? Was it in the original press release, or did the editor make it up? Is that what Rob actually said? Was he sober?
So, it is entirely possible that an agency that consistently features with the 3rd best piece of work finishes the year at the top of the table?... Hey, wait a second... We're already there! No need to change the system. Posted on 16 Sep 2008 16:08
The reaper
How it works-
Ogilvy big. Gerry president. Finalist good.
Network small. Rob president. Finalist not good. Posted on 16 Sep 2008 17:09
Reaper, you know...-
Let me add another example.

Daddy buy me a pony, brilliant. But zero connections=Zero recognition (ditto Fox P2, et al)...

At least that lunatic Strappini is nowhere near the Creative Circle's 'in crowd'. Can you imagine JWT topping the creative table? Posted on 16 Sep 2008 18:35
eagles-
Hey i'd rather have rob deciding on how this thing is run than gerry, at least it will be fairer. On another note, Since the eagle award are now back on, does the creative circle allocate points for this award? Last time i checked i found no eagles points. Could someone clarify this? points-
Just an observation to the creative circle, don't you find it amazing that the majority of international agencies rank themselves completely separate to their groups. Perhaps we should get rid of group rankings altogether as this does not demonstrate the true creative potential of an agency. Crap agencies should not be allowed to ride on the success of their sister agencies. If an agency wins they should take the glory, not the group. I don't recall AMV london ever claiming an award tally from a sister BBDO agency. eg: Network bbdo should not be allowed to claim an award won by bbdo cape town. It's a different agency and probably had nothing to do with the award itself. Posted on 16 Sep 2008 20:21
Cannes, D&AD, One Show-
Woah, this is totally confusing. The cool thing about the points system was that it gave a context for all the different awards.

Some awards are coveted more than others. In other words: A Cannes Gold does not equal a Loerie Gold.

And how many people have had a Bronze Loerie convert to a much higher international award? Which is probably why the Loeries have moved to after Cannes (just speculating).

Anyway...does anyone have an answer for this? Will a Cannes Gold have equal wighting to a Loerie Gold? Or will we simply tally the metal seperately after each individual awards show, with no overall-end-of-year tally? Posted on 24 Sep 2008 18:50
