Well-known industry player WingWing Qingqile Mdlulwa has taken up the post of creative director at Net#work BBDO, effective 1 March 2008, the agency announced this morning, Tuesday, 4 March 2008.
Chief creative officer Mike Schalit, who announced the addition of the creative heavy weight this week at a staff gathering, was reported to have looked like the “cat that got the cream”. And Mdlulwa was all smiles as Schalit used his usual banter and wit to welcome him into the Net#work family.
Mdlulwa has spent the past ten years adding value to brands such as Vodacom, Toyota, Chicken Licken, True Love and most recently the Johannesburg Tourism Company. His titles and accolades include Chairman of The Loerie Awards in 2007 and being honoured by the Financial Mail with the New Broom Award for “being a young person making a significant contribution to the industry”.
He has also been named in the Top 25 Most Influential People in the advertising industry according to a Financial Mail survey. Plus he has been running his own agency Twist, since 2004.
So why go from running your own show back to employee status? A clearly enthusiastic Mdlulwa said it's not every day you get an offer to work with Schalit: “Working at Net#work will give me opportunities that will step up my game. I also get to work closely with people I have admired and respected from a distance for a long time. What struck me most in my initial discussions with Mike and Keith Shipley [his partner] is our shared value that creativity can change the world.”
Must say,I have never met or seen wing wing, have only heard of him, but jah the guy has done it in the industry, well done bru. am a young AE, but i do give credit where its due, coz i am mad bout the indastreee. thumbs up and good luck @ network. Posted on 4 Mar 2008 16:23
Good people, good things, good place, good job, good time and good results.
I'm motivated by top achievers, hard workers, it's all about putting your name there.
Fly higher even higher than the birds. That applies to all of you heading that direction. Good people of Mzantsi make things happen!!!! Posted on 4 Mar 2008 16:49
...and i don't give a rabbit's behind if some, most or all of you take offence. I find it very strange that a creative of this guy's calibre is being congratulated for leaving his own shop to being employed by someone else. I am aware that other factors might have a role in his decision. Something else that I noticed, this guy - as brilliant as is gets called Qingile (sp) when running his own shop and then back to wing-wing now that he is employed. There is something seriously wrong here and most of you kno what it is.
Actually, to hell with it - i'll say it: MetropolitanRepublic, Ireland and somebody and others - young men branching out and all land big accounts. Is this a question of they are better than him and that is why they have the accounts they have? If so, is wing-wing not an ex chaiperson of the Loeries and why was he elected into that position if he lacks the creativity shown by these other fellas? Was the appointment a bit of windo dressing? Is this a case marketers not having faith in black award winning creatives?
Come guys, let's call this what it is - when will black people get that white rod off their backsides!? You're being fvcked with...and hard, i just don't know why you don't see it. Marketing Managers, did it ever occur to you that black people are the majoruty in this country and the stuff you sell os mostly bought by them? Why not believe that a boy from Tembisa can sell a car to his neighbour? But then again, maybe darkies are just plain lazy and lack the balls to go it alone?
Anyway, the wingman has a family and he needs to feed it. I'm not mad, no not at all but but it's time poeple start asking questions. Posted on 6 Mar 2008 15:23
Mmm ... must say I would have preferred Wing to succeed on his own terms. We need an agency run by a hotshot black creative. It's time. Network is too cosy. Fortune favours the bold. Posted on 10 Mar 2008 20:55
I can't believe that a man of your stature would consider going back and becoming ja baas nee baas employer!! Where's your pride? This is the dumbest decision I have ever seen anyone make. The funny thing about it all is that white folks look at black entrepreneurs and say "I told u they couldn't make it” I honestly thought you were a strong individual but I guess NOT!! Then again I don't know you that well either.
Why did you move? It can't be for a challenge because you had your own shop for a while. That’s a challenge on it’s own. This doesn't say much about your character. But..... Good luck Posted on 12 Mar 2008 16:04
