The winner of the 2007 Big Blue Makhulu Polane t-shirt design competition is Yvette de Jager from Johannesburg. Yvette wins R20 000 and her winning ‘blender' design will be printed and sold in all Big Blue and Kitsch & Kool stores during December and January.
The 2007 design theme was: What is your interpretation of ‘AfroKaaner'? The theme was creatively interpreted and 528 designs were submitted online via www.bigblue.co.za. The campaign was supported with online advertising on Cherryflava.com, Jetstreaker.com and Bizcommunity.com as well as posts on numerous design, fashion and culture blogs.
Makhulu Polane (Big Idea) aims to discover new, original, South African talent. The online competition was launched in 2006 and is open to anyone who feels they have a t-shirt design which is unique and quintessentially South African.
Yvette's winning ‘blender' design was inspired by her thought that the concept of the ‘Afrokaaner' cannot be limited to any one group or kind of person, but is a term which represents a cultural evolution. She felt that the constant merging of various influences would be illustrated well by using an image of a blender. The simplicity of the design will translate well on t-shirts and the image captures the spirit of “AfroKaaner” in a simple, eye-catching way.
Big Blue's award winning Makhulu Polane campaign is an annual online competition aimed at discovering and supporting South African design.
Makhulu Polane will be featured on ‘Curious Culture' on SABC 2 on 29 August at 8pm and the top 20 Makhulu Polane 2007 designs are currently showcased at www.bigblue.co.za.
