MetropolitanRepublic and MTN Uganda win at Digital Impact Awards Africa

MetropolitanRepublic and mobile telecommunications provider MTN Uganda took several awards at the inaugural Digital Impact Awards Africa, held in Kampala, Uganda, on Thursday 21 August 2014.
The awards aim to stimulate innovation and the application of best practice to foster sustainable digital innovation, products and services across Africa, with a particular focus on Uganda and East Africa.

MTN Uganda, nominated in seven categories, was named digital brand of the year and won the award for best corporate brand on social media, where it has the biggest Facebook following in Uganda with more than 350,000 fans.

"Duck Egg", the MTN Africa brand commercial made by MetropolitanRepublic for broadcast in Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia and South Africa, was revealed as the People's Choice video commercial of the year.

In the spot, which employs the theme of "Oh, the things you'll learn", a little girl finds a lonely egg while playing by a river. She takes it home and uses the New World of MTN to immerse herself in all things "duck" through her online research. Her adventures then take an unexpected turn.

For Uganda, MetropolitanRepublic also launched an interactive digital egg hunt, which mirrored the TV commercial by encouraging customers to use online research and technology to find the answers to a series of digitally presented clues. The Egg Hunt won best corporate digital marketing campaign at Thursday's awards ceremony.

"We are exceptionally proud of MTN Uganda's social media performance and the recognition the team has received for its work. It is great to work with a client who is so progressive and willing to try new ideas," said Bronwen Auret, head of digital operations at MetropolitanRepublic.

Kenneth Kiddu, acting chief marketing officer at MTN Uganda, said: "Last year we took the award for best corporate on social media at the inaugural Social Media Awards. Being nominated again this year and winning is testimony of the public's recognition of our efforts to deliver on our vision of delivering a bold, digital New World in which we leverage digital solutions to improve how we serve our customers through convenient and cost-effective ways."

Staged in partnership with the National Information Technology Authority Uganda, the awards this year coincided with a conference on topics such as health, education and government e-services; financial services; social media; digital communications; and big data.

MetropolitanRepublic has offices in Johannesburg (our head office), Cape Town, Zambia, Swaziland, Rwanda and Uganda.
