The latest Hyundai Grand i10 TV commercial
has just been wrapped up by the Jupiter Drawing Room Cape Town team and features a rap version of Frank Sinatra's most iconic cover version, My Way
by up-and-coming rapper, Abdi Hussein (Whosane).
Old Blue Eyes didn't write the music or words for his most eminent track. The lyrics were written by Canadian singer Paul Anka, and set to music based on the French song Comme d'habitude
composed in 1967 by Claude Francois and Jacques Revaux.
When trying to license the music on a short deadline, it's never good to hear that one of the French composers doesn't have internet access and good old snail-mail is the only option you have.
Our team seriously had to send a letter to get permission to license the music. And it transpires that our postal service is reliable after all. The letter arrived and we got the go ahead. Life is pretty...well, grand.
We worked with Grant de Sousa of Embassy to plan, shoot, and edit a slick music video featuring a meeting between Whosane and the Hyundai Grand i10. Simon Malherbe at Freq'ncy produced the track over two weeks of late nights and three-in-the-morning jam sessions.
