Riverstone's Jeremy comes to the party for FNB

The new FNB TV commercial directed by Jeremy Holden of Riverstone Films may feature no children onscreen, but it does boast an elaborate kid's birthday party, complete with a miniature pony and carriage, a hyperactive pug, a mariachi band, a magician and a harpist, amongst others. Combining charming on-camera performances with some fantastical characters and party treats, the commercial dramatises the need to have cash available when life throws you an unexpected curveball.
The quirky 45-second spot, conceived by ad agency DDB Johannesburg, promotes the bank's latest investment product, the MyNotice Deposit.

Set in a restaurant, a young mum mentions her daughter's upcoming party to her friend, who quickly points out how extravagant, competitive and costly these parties are nowadays. As she does so, all the above elements for a successful party are brought to life on screen, while the voiceover touts FNB's new product as the ideal investment to save for such expenses.

Director Holden chose famed Italian country restaurant Casalinga as the setting for the complex one-day shoot. Marshalling all the action (which also included a flambé chef, a pink pony, carriage, and champagne fountain) was no mean feat, says Holden, who is proud that all the imaginary effects and characters took place in-camera, "though we did add a flame in post," he quips.

The spot's concept was the brainchild of DDB creative team Matthew Berge and Hital Pandya, under creative directorship of Liam Wielopolski, produced by Rachel Andreotti, and begins airing nationally from January.
