Jacques Burger to head up M&C Saatchi Abel Joburg

22 Jul 2010 18:2640 commentsBizLike
It has been confirmed that South African expat Jacques Burger, CEO of Australian agency The Campaign Palace, will be returning to South Africa to head up M&C Saatchi Abel's new Johannesburg office opening on 1 October 2010, with close friend and creative director Vumile Mavumengwana as partner.

Jacques Burger
M&C Saatchi's expansion into the Johannesburg market and Burger's move back to SA demonstrates both M&C Saatchi's and Burger's confidence in the country.

Comments Mike Abel, chief executive partner of M&C Saatchi Abel, "We are thrilled to have an outstanding global talent and friend like Burger head up our second South African operation. This appointment builds on the exceptional start that we've made in attracting both clients and talent. In the past six months we've been appointed by companies like MWeb, Sanlam, Furnish, Radisson Blu, Park Inn and Ramsay Media, amongst other great brands."

Comments Burger, "I was delighted when Mike Abel approached me with this incredible opportunity. I have been blown away by what they have achieved so far, swiftly securing talent and new business and I look forward to contributing to this exciting new group."

Vumile Mavumengwana
"Couldn't think of a better person"

Adds Mavumengwana, "I couldn't think of a better person to partner with in opening the agency."

Burger, who assumed leadership of the Campaign Palace, mid 2008, has been widely acknowledged for the outstanding success he has helped achieve with that iconic agency. In the past two years he has lead the creative rejuvenation of the agency, with work being recognised and awarded at Cannes, D&AD, One Show, New York Festival and the EFFIES. A raft of new accounts have been added to the agency and he has built up a formidable team, attracting an internationally acclaimed group of individuals across all disciplines. In 2009, he was ranked one of the 40 most impressive performers under the age of 40 in marketing and communications in Australia by AdNews.

Says Zeyad Davids, managing partner digital, another returnee to SA, "Jacques and I didn't work together in Australia, but JB has a formidable reputation for leading the digital transformation of one of Australia's true creative powerhouses. Having spoken at length with Jacques about using digital to measurably improve our clients business, I'm thrilled that he's joining the team."

"Superb job leading the Palace"

"Jacques has done a superb job leading the Palace. He came in at a particularly sensitive time and quickly exceeded expectations on all measures. Passionate, talented, extremely hard-working and with impeccable values - we've been lucky to have him. An excellent professional and a good friend," says Nigel Marsh, well-known author and group CEO, Y&R Brands ANZ.

It is no secret that Burger enjoys a very close and highly successful history with the leadership team of M&C Saatchi Abel, having once led the Ogilvy Cape Group under Abel, then COO of the national Ogilvy Group.

...oooooh how traditional....-
I was really hoping that M&C would bring something new! They just brought more of the same old traditional thinking, but then again, what can you expect with this management that came out of retirement? Posted on 22 Jul 2010 18:55

Who's paying for all of this?-
Can you imaging? They are running now for 5 months, new business list looks like a joke as soon as you look a bit deeper and now they're hiring another top salary! How is this possible? Is M&C Saatchi the only agency in the UK that isn't feeling the pinch of the recession? Furthermore is this more proof of international network investing here to draw the profits to make up for their own loses? only time will tell, until then the previous speaker is right... the OLD Ogilvy team is complete. Posted on 22 Jul 2010 18:52
Where are the entrepreneurs?-
Is this another so called Abel "Entrepreneur"? Posted on 22 Jul 2010 18:57
Mike's Entrepreneurs club ;-)-
Hahaha, Mike is starting his own Entrepreneursclub after he got rejected by the real entrepreneurs! Posted on 22 Jul 2010 18:59

how long?-
can you operate without making a profit? And know they start just all over again with the Jozi office! This is what brings the current industry in such a bad light. Can you really blame clients that they think we waist budgets? Posted on 22 Jul 2010 19:05
qualified to comment?-
I suggest you clean up your spelling and grammar before you comment on something like this. Clearly you are not qualified. Posted on 26 Jul 2010 10:28

Waisting budgets (sic)-
You can't blame a client for accusing you of wasting budgets if THIS is how you write buddy.

Hiding behind a cloak of anonymity gives some people a feeling of power. In reality, it's a mark of weakness, insecurity and fear.

Social media has liberated the soap box for many a disgruntled and misinformed soul...

Oh please Mr. Davids-
Don't get all adult on us now. Fact is your new business list does look a little flimsy. And the model is hardly new. This is not a phone call. It's a comments page. Write a comment. Nobody is going to call you. Posted on 22 Jul 2010 20:47

So you won the PR part of the MWeb business... Looking at the above I wouldn't take any further clients until you've sorted your own PR. PS check your url's before posting them :-) Posted on 22 Jul 2010 22:29

Smells like Ogilvy Lite-
Well, if you trot out all the big words like "exceptional start", "incredible opportunity", "outstanding success", "formidable team", and every other PR cliche in the book - it just sounds like so much hot air, and you can expect a few sharps at the big balloon of your own blowing.
Methinks you're churning the waters yourselves.
A bunch of expats jetting in from Australia, the big white way, with their newly-minted knowledge, to show the locals a thing or two.
And then it looks like they're assembling the old firm, while trying to convince us, too eagerly, they are going to be different.
We're waiting with bated breath to see which way the wind blows. Posted on 23 Jul 2010 03:15
What a joke-
A joke that a perfectly positive story about a great advertising talent coming home gets ruined by such uninformed and petty remarks - welcome back JB Posted on 23 Jul 2010 07:29

Tired of South African negativity-
Glad to see all that World Cup optimism & positivity is alive and well 2 weeks after the final whistle has blown!!!
C'mon peeps, South Africans are world beaters and now we have a great South African talent back on our shores. M&C Saatchi Abel is stronger for it and the South African advertising industry is much stronger for it... Posted on 23 Jul 2010 11:18
Pity-
JB is a great man and a great talent - pity he is let down by a press release riddled with 1980's style advertising rhetoric. It quite frankly insults the intelligence of everyone reading it. It's embarrassing and to be honest; JB deserves better. Posted on 23 Jul 2010 11:36

Greats-
Mike and Jacques are great admen and that is what matters here. The partnership will do well as it has in the past regardless of the negativity from a few biz community readers.

Great to see Vums there too!

Good luck to them!!! Posted on 23 Jul 2010 11:59
Vumi-
Is that all you can say about the partner... Posted on 23 Jul 2010 12:24
Ogilvy Lite or Heavy?-
Interesting to see the ogilvy lite comment - that must mean there is an ogilvy heavy in the mix too - interesting question is which is which? Seems the new 'lite' now has all the talent that used to make Ogilvy a heavyweight contender Posted on 23 Jul 2010 13:35

Watch this space-
in referance to the ogilvy lite or heavy comment... very very true. Is Ogilvy watching their back??? Posted on 23 Jul 2010 14:37

In response to Ogilvy Lite or Heavy...-
The argument that Ogilvy CT is Lite seems a little unsubstantiated. Look at the agency's marketing and creative performance over the last 12 months: The most awarded agency in the country at this year's Prism awards. The 4th best performing SA agency at Cannes this year, and the best performing Cape Town agency. And 4 awards (2 silvers and 2 bronzes) at the recent Apex Awards. Perhaps you'd like to substantiate your argument a little more? Posted on 23 Jul 2010 14:44

Debate is healthy-
Well, well, welcome back. And really a little debate over the future of the industry is healthy and very necessary. We do need to think our way out of potential irrelevance, and make ourselves invaluable and future-friendly.
We also don't have to be too polite. Passion and belief will win the day.
In the end, the proof of this particular pudding will be in the eating. Even if a few cream pies fly. Posted on 23 Jul 2010 16:00
I hope you get some business soon-

Let's sing and dance-
"The Big White Way" is just a tongue-in-cheek reference to Broadway, and the song-and-dance culture, and yes Australia. No specific reference to Mr. Davids, or any of the other fine fellows. Posted on 23 Jul 2010 16:09

Jealous down-
Guys just have faith and create the right energies for them. Welcome to Jozi guys. Posted on 23 Jul 2010 16:32
This is not an Ogilvy story-
In whose interests is it to denegrate this new agency? I feel so sorry for those threatened Ogilvy and other little agency people - you know who you are - who feel that they can only get ahead and in the headlines by trashing Mike and his people. This is a good-news story about proven and highly talented people , and this is great for the ad industry as a whole.
So take your negativity elsewhere , and put your energy into something constructive. Posted on 23 Jul 2010 19:19

bashing season-
I am a touch confused, I read the article and thought it was about JB returning to head up the Jhb office of M&CSaatchi Abel - how did this spiral into an ex Ogilvy bashing contest? Don't be jealous people, competition is a good thing! Posted on 23 Jul 2010 19:23

M&C Abel Bashing-
I suspect that 90% of the above squeelers haven't the balls nor business savvy to start their own agencies. It is completely unnecessary to be so hideously scathing, even if their PR is plumped up, which is necessary when you are establishing a reputation from scratch. Posted on 27 Jul 2010 13:16

Well well-
I've always thought it was better to be looked over, than overlooked. If the above comments are anything to go by then there's a lot of looking which means the industry are watching carefully. Good news for the M&C Saatchi Abel crew, only 5 months old & already got good clients, already got good talent, already got 2 locations and already got reactions. I like it and can't wait to see what happens a year from now when the above are begging for jobs at the black & white door. Posted on 27 Jul 2010 13:48

To Mel in Africa-
very very well said. The industry are certianly looking. Mike you are an amazing leader and have no doubt you will give the industry something to take notice of. Good luck to you and the team and to all you M&C Saatchi Abel bashers - get OVER yourselves..... Posted on 28 Jul 2010 14:19

Lets hear it-
This reminds me of Germany mobilising their forces for battle before world war 2(Although without the evil intent of course).

Now that the forces are in place surely it's time to unleash the fury.

Any comment team Saatchi? What are the plans??? Posted on 20 Aug 2010 17:00
