Renewed outbreak of spam to the printing sector
Issued by: Printing Questions

It appears that there has been a new outbreak of spam from the KST mailing list which was apparently hijacked by spammers from either Telkom or their partner Pomoroy. The mailing list in question targets the whole printing industry in South Africa and unfortunately will include many of PIFSA's members.

As explained in my earlier Circular 3548 the list was legally supplied to KST by Sentient Publishing who consider this act by whatever third party to be criminal as well as a violation of their copyright in this intellectual property.

It appears that all replies to the email received, either to unsubscribe or to complain about the content of the mail are then forwarded to all email addresses on the original list. Many of the emails received are in fact angry responses (in some cases using foul language) from other recipients. This in turn creates further mail if the receiver replies to the sender.

Please advise your members not to reply and not to try to unsubscribe. They should also not reply to another recipient from whom they receive mail in this regard as this will again proliferate another bulk mailing.

With the proliferation of spam and unsolicited mail, all businesses are advised to invest in effective filtering systems. Most service providers offer this service, but some may not be as effective as others.

PIFSA has, on behalf of our members, taken the matter up with KST, who have assured us that they are doing all in their power to identify the source and stop the spam outbreaks.
