13th Annual Mondi Paper Magazine Awards Calls For Entries For 2001

Mondi Paper and the Magazine Publishers Association of South Africa (MPASA) are calling for entries for the 2001 Mondi Paper Magazine Awards. The Mondi Paper Magazine Awards have since inception 13 years ago acknowledged South Africa’s finest pieces of magazine journalism.

Individuals engaged in the various fields of magazine journalism are invited to submit their entries based on work published during 2001. The categories include At Home, Business, Columns, Design and Illustration, Essays and Fiction, Fashion, Features, Foresight, Health and Beauty, Leisure, Photography and Reviews.

This year sees the addition of three new business-to-business categories: Product Coverage, Systems Coverage and Industry Coverage. In the Product Coverage category, the judging panel will look for the article that with the greatest breadth and depth assesses developments in the marketplace. For entries in the Systems Coverage category, the principle is to identify the article that most strikingly adds to the reader’s understanding. It is almost anything – research, context, pitfalls – relating to what is coming up on tomorrow’s sales counters. The Industry Coverage category calls for entries that display insight, acuity and revelation on organisational aspects of the business world.

"There is so much talent in South Africa, and the Mondi Paper Magazine Awards is certainly a celebration of that," remarks Justine Tasker of SL magazine, winner in last year's Fashion category. She adds, "The feeling of walking up there to receive your award is fantastic. It's wonderful to be nominated along with the country's best, and even better to be told that you are the best. I would encourage all those talented people out there to enter. Competition is good for you, and it's important that the standards get higher and more difficult to judge each year."

The judging panel, chaired by one of South Africa’s most celebrated authors and media personalities, Denis Beckett, comprises Anna Boshoff, Sue Grant-Marshall, Joe Khumalo, Latiefa Mobara, Fraser Mtshali, Pami Preller, Dan Retief, Gus Silber and De Waal Venter.

Winners in each category will be presented with the coveted Mondi nib trophy, an R8000 cash prize and a framed certificate. The winners will be announced at the 2001 Mondi Paper Magazines Awards prize-giving function on Thursday 9 May 2002 at the Sandton Hilton.

The closing date for entries is 22 February 2002. Entries must be addressed to Nikki Ruttimann, Print Media S.A., 5th Floor, North Wing, Nedbank Gardens, 33 Bath Avenue, Rosebank. For further information, please contact Nikki on (011) 447 1264 or .
