It's a wild life for Ross Jack

Transitioning from producer to artist a few years ago, Ross Jack has been steadily increasing his reach and fans since EP, "Chandeliers" and debut album, "Notes from the Wild". We had an email chit chat with him to find out more.

BizcommunityYou seem to have lived quite the cosmopolitan life so far, living in SA, Spain and the UK. How do you think these different cultural backgrounds have affected your sound?

Ross Jack: I think it's just allowed me to have a different, or my own, perspective on things including my sound and writing, I try to combine all the different vibes I like in my music and different friends and family would have introduced me to some of those different vibes.

What was it like working on debut album "Notes from the Wild"?

One of the best experiences of my life without a doubt; also a massive learning curve for me. I don't think I would have kicked off any other way. I'm excited for what's ahead musically.

What's the meaning behind the title?

The title is like a metaphor for the world we live in and my experiences in it. Also, overseas, some people seem to believe we live in the wild or the jungle. Haha, so it's also got a little reference to that.

You have quite a few colabs on Notes from the Wild; how do you go about choosing who to collaborate with?

I just go on my own appreciation of other artists; if I like what you do I'm always interested in working together.

What was it like transitioning from producer to artist and performer?

Becoming an artist had its challenges but happened naturally. To be honest I can't even imagine just being a producer anymore. I feel like creatively it was meant to be.

What was it like working with Pete Martin?

It was killer going to London to work with Pete. Once again I learnt so much and feel I came back with my mission complete. He's a cool dude.

Best musical moment of your career so far?

I think the whole journey up till now has been crazy. I have a couple best moments so it's tough to choose, but the number one on 5FM with "tvsintheswimmingpool" was one of the best moments.

What are your thoughts on the South African music scene?

It's a great time to be a part of the South African scene right now. I feel excited about all the talent popping up. It's cool to be part of it.

If you could be any animal what would you be and why?

A lion. I'm a control freak so I'd be better of being a scary cat. Haha.

Future plans?

An international break is like my biggest dream to chase at the moment.
