Go green with Vuka
Issued by: Vuka Scuta

Vuka Scuta, the local providers of two-wheeler transport, are now making it easy to be both fashionable and environmentally conscious. One of the latest scooter models that Vuka has introduced to the market is the XT125, which complies with the latest Euro II emission standards.

Due to the fuel efficiency of the Vuka range, which covers between 30-55km per litre, and the smaller engine capacity, the XT125 emits only 1.5 grams of carbon containing combustion by-products per kilometre travelled. This emission level conforms to the Euro II requirement for two-wheelers and has a significantly smaller carbon footprint than a standard passenger car.

According to Vuka's Technical Director, Tony Cundill, the major difference between the Vuka and a normal car is the fact that a catalytic converter is not needed to achieve the emission requirements. “The current Euro II emission standards for a passenger car range between 2.2-5 grams of carbon monoxide and between 0.5-0.7grams of nitrous oxide per kilometre. Although the difference does not seem that significant, it becomes quite substantial when you view the emission levels over a 10 000 kilometre distance,” mentions Cundill.

“At Vuka, we aim to provide an affordable and reliable transport alternative for the South African commuter public. Through careful design and by optimising efficiency, we don't only achieve this, but we can also simultaneously protect the environment. The fully automatic XT and XR125 models do not feature 4-valve cylinders, high lift camshafts or free flow exhausts. Although this would have increased the power of these zippy scooters, it would also have significantly increased the emissions. Despite the fact that such emission reduction measures are currently not a legal requirement in South Africa, Vuka still chose this route to achieve the highest efficiency and lowest emissions possible without a massive cost implication,” explains Cundill.

The Vuka range starts with the entry level XL110 model and also includes the XT and XR125 scooters, the TM125 and TM200 street scramblers, a new generation sporty XT150 scooter with great handling and powerful delivery as well as a ML150 water-cooled scooter and the recently introduced RM125 and RM200 classic road bikes. There are nine different models in the range with the introductory model retailing at under R5000 and the top model selling at less than R13000.

Vuka prides itself on delivering superb after-sales service to their customers and have established large Vuka Corporate Stores in most major centres throughout the country. Vuka offers comprehensive service back-up with the main assembly centres in Killarney Gardens and Johannesburg each carrying more than 500 lines of spare parts per model.
