
Twenty-five-year-old Darren Cronje has won the Loeries 2008 Young Creatives Award and, with it, an all-expenses-paid trip to the One Show in New York - and the Student Judging Panel for the Loeries was announced yesterday, Monday 1 June 2009.

Loeries Annual, designed by Net#work BBDO, promises to be a bumper edition. It will close off the 2008 theme, “Make your mom proud”, taking on the appearance of a family photo album. It also comes with a DVD set featuring the TV, radio, experiential and digital winners.

The scholarship has the broader aim of increasing awareness of the creative industry as a career path for disadvantaged students and to increase the flow of creative talent into the industry.

The Parlotones hit, "I'll Be There", received a Craft certificate for animation and special visual effects. This reportedly marks the first time a music video has won at the Loeries.

A recommendation by Velocity Films executive producer, Peter Carr, saw Be Phat Motel Film Company approached early in 2008 to produce a series of visuals for this year's 30th anniversary Loerie Awards ceremony, specifically the six musical performances. Be Phat Motel is an up-and-coming collaboration between a number of young South African industry professionals.

The Velocity party by the pool at Margate last weekend for the 30th annual Loeries was its usual rockin' self. Sweat.x got those feet tapping and all those folks going down brown, whilet the girls in tight lycra introduced everyone to Jose and the boys in gold shorts and painted toenails shook their well-formed booties.

[Jennifer Vivier] FoxP2 left Margate over the moon and under the weather in the early hours of Monday morning, 28 July 2008, with the joint highest number of golds won and in fourth position in the overall Loeries ranking, with 2250 points - just a hundred points short of creative powerhouse Net#work and ahead of agency giant Jupiter.

Frieze Films directors Tony Baggott and Steve Tanchel projects picked up Loerie awards this past weekend: Baggott notched up two Bronzes, one each for Audi and KFC 'Love Notes'; while Tanchel won a Bronze for Soweto Rugby Club. His MTN 'Snapshots' commercial, which he directed for Metropolitan Republic, picked up a Gold editing craft.

Gold Loeries were at a premium this year, with only 23 (19 Professional and four Student) being awarded. Communications services agency proximity#ttp was one of the select few, with a Gold Loerie for its Cell C campaign, Hummerville, in the Experiential, Digital - Microsite category, which also received a Silver, Bronze and a Craft Certificate in other categories.
